I’m Yelping

I’ve decided to start a yelp.  Today I was try find a good dentist but no one had any reviews.  I thought about how easy it would be to choose a dentist if people wrote about their experiences.  So that’s why I am yelping. One to help those businesses that value customer service and to force those business who don’t value customer, to do so.

I am learning that business don’t take you serious until you start to write letters and reviews on their business.  I’ve played nice for too long.  This year I will not let another business rape me (yea, it is a strong word but that’s what they do to us) without me writing a review but more importantly a letter.

Functions of Water in the Body

So I’ve been drinking more water lately.  I’m consciously drinking 8 glasses a day.  Kind of a big deal, right?! Well it is, considering my previous water intake or lack thereof.

I work 10-16 hour days. Sometimes I would have a soda and/or a glass of water within that time period until I get home.  At home I may drink a bottle of water or a cup of juice before going to bed.  Yea it was bad, I know, and that’s why I am on this journey.

I’ve been on this journey for 3 days now but I am going to make this a LIFESTYLE.

I have succeeded in developing a habit. Now I can NOT go on my with day without doing this particular thing.  I’m embarrassed to tell you all what it is, but know that I have developed a good habit.  lol.  With that track record, I know that I am capable of attaing this goal.

So its been 3 days and I already feel a big difference.  Some physical and mental changes that I have noticed are:

1) I use the restroom about 5-7 times a day (no.1 not no.2, lol) and my urine is clear.  Thus I am constantly ridding my system of toxins and by-products of fat and my urine color signifies I have sufficient water intake.

2) I developed a harsh patch of eczema on my elbow.  I have used everything that you can think of (prescribed and OTC) and nothing really seems to get rid of it. It has been on and off for like 2 years.  I know its associated with my move back to Miami from St. Louis but its very annoying and embarrassing.  It would start to clear and then the itch would return and BAM! it’s back.  Every since I have increased my water intake, my skin doesn’t itch like it used to.  I never thought about ezcema/skin in the same light as water.  It wasn’t until today that I thought about how much my skin itch has slowed down.  And so I thought about what I have changed within these few days and the only thing that has changed is my water intake. Because skin is our largest body organ it requires its share of water. Water helps to replenish skin tissues, it moisturizes the skin and increase it increases the skin’s elasticity. It’s crazy how within 3 days my skin feels  so much better because I’m drinking water.

3) As stated earlier, I work long hour days. Thus I need all the energy I can get, to be productive during those long hours.  Because our brain is mostly made up of water, drinking water helps you think better and be more alert. I am no where as tired as I used to be.  I tell you the power of water is incredible.

I’m looking forward to how developing this habit helps my hair.  I’ve learned that drinking water flushes your body of toxins, chemicals, and impurities that stifle hair growth and disrupts hormone and enzyme imbalances. Thus, drinking more water should promote hair growth. I believe that it will, water has done everything else its promised to do, so I’ll will let you all know about how it affects my hair.

Do you drink enough water? What changes (physical/emotional/ mental) have you noticed since increasing your water intake?

Loc Nots

he loves me

he love me not

he loves me

he loves me not . . . .

I am drawing near to my 2nd year lociversary.  As my locs grow older and more mature I am learning what my locs love and what they don’t.  Thus, I will be starting a blog category called Loc Nots.  In this series I will be talking about what I have learned (through trial and error) not to put on my locs; what my locs hate and what they can do without.

I retwisted my hair about 2-3 weeks ago and I was not pleased.  When I retwisted I attempted to do pipe cleaner curls.  My locs went limp and frizzy after 4 days of my retwist and I was utterly perplexed.   My first set of pipe cleaner curls lasted for more than 3 weeks.  So I knew I did something wrong when these curls lasted for about 3 days .  The cause — my glycerin and water mix.

I washed my hair in the morning and went to work.  When I came home, I put some glycerin and water in my spray bottle to moisten my now dry hair, for my retwist.  I used my CD’s Loc Butter to retwist and put in the pipe cleaners.  I left the pipe cleaners for an entire day to dry and to take shape.  When I took them out I had a curl pattern but not a really defined one as before.  My loose curls soon drooped after 48 hours <insert sad face>

Thus, my first Loc Not is water and glycerin mix when you want to have curls in your hair.  I know that glyverin is a humectant and it draws water but damn I didn’t put the two together –>  Curls drop when in contact with water. lol.  It also left my hair frizzy and that’s totally unacceptable.  Will I ever use it again, uhm nope!  I do think that it works wonders for natural loose hair.  But be sure to use it moderatly!

Have you used glycerin and water on your locs? How did it turn out?

Braid out

I’ve been rocking this braid out for about over two weeks.  I used Sarah Hersenberger liquid gel and it holds the crinkles in for a food while.  Here is a preview of week 1.

Jojoba Oil

As many of you know, I’ve become a semi-natural product junkie.  I say semi because it’s gets expensive to dive into the “natural/organic” world and a sista is on a REAL budget.

But I have begun the process by educating myself on nature’s products and investing in some of these products.

Anyhoo, recently i have been using jojoba oil (pronounced “ho-HO-bah”) on my scalp.  My scalp just needed some TLC, I had a 16 ounce bottle of jojoba sitting around so I decided to indulge.  I brought the oil because I heard of all the fantastic things that it does to and for your skin.  Specifically, I brought it to use on my hair, but I may be expanding its use to my skin.  I can just hear Jo (pronounced Joe) quietly seducing me “Use me Baby, I wanna be your slave!”

Natural Clarifiers

Most loc wearers aspire to have smooth and shiny loc’s.  It is essential to keep your loc’s clean in order to reach this goal. However, what many people don’t realize is that many shampoos will leave residue on the loc’s, making them look dull and dirty.  Also a lot of us do not thoroughly clean the buildup of wax, dirt, butters, mineral oils, petroleum, gels, and other residue in our loc’s.  I always wash my hair with HOT water, the hottest you can take it.  Hot water melts the heavy products we may use to twist your hair.  We must remember that because dredlocks are thick, dirt and grime build up easily.

We can allievate these issues of buildup by looking in our kitchen cabinets.

To maintain shiny loc’s and to remove any residue follow any one of these loc mainteance recipes:
